The Laboratory for Death Studies at USP’s Institute of Psychology was founded in 2000 by Prof. Dr. Maria Julia Kovács and psychologist Nancy Vaiciunas.

The study of the subject of death has always been important in psychology, especially at a time when the denial of death and the ban on talking about it are very present.

Among the objectives of the Laboratory for Death Studies are: training health and education professionals who are sensitive to people in situations of loss, mourning and death in the various stages of development; research involving undergraduate and postgraduate students and health and education professionals; stimulating the search for knowledge, reflection and discussion on the themes of death; creating a database with up-to-date bibliography and providing assistance to the community for people in situations of mourning and loss.
